Monthly Teacher Reports

Just like modern educators, Reconstruction-era teachers were required to document information about student progress and participation. Monthly reports submitted to freedmen's aid societies and Freedmen's Bureau officials contained quantitative data, such as enrollment and attendance numbers, as well as qualitative observations. Teachers who failed to send in news about their school often had their paychecks withheld. Even with this strict policy in place, some reports remain absent from the historical record.
