Rev S. S. Jocelyn
My Dear Sir-
Yours of the 28th ult. reached me today. I am truly glad that I am “approved”. I have felt an intense interest in the education of my freed brethren South and have been actuated to enter into this work simply by a desire to be a pioneer in trying to raise them up to the stature of manhood and womanhood in “Christ Jesus.” Now as to my surroundings and location- I am willing to go anywhere excepting to Port Royal or islands adjacent- I care but little whether I am sent to a city or to a rural district. I prefer to go as missionary but of course I expect to be engaged in both day and night schools as teacher. Shall expect the Association to pay me the salary of a missionary- I should be pleased to be one of those “who could go into the work without any pecuniary compensation” from your excellent society; but I am in duty bound to assist a widowed mother and brothers and sisters some. I am very willingly making some sacrafice by leaving a situation that yields me twice the salary which I hope for in my new field- Please let me know as soon as possible just how soon I will be required to go South. The sooner the better. I shall however need a little notice in order to get ready- Enclosed is a certificate from Prof. D. H Crittenden relative to my success as teacher in this place. You will greatly oblige me by returning it.
Yours for the Cause,
Edmonia G. Highgate
