Rev. S. S. Jocelyn
Dear Friend
Your favor was forwarded to me from Montreal. I left that city completely worn after crowding two weeks or more work into one. I have little or no prospect of the success here even that I had there. I was obliged to board a few days here but am now charmingly domiciled in the elegant home of Mr. James Fraser to whom please send the mag. There is great apathy here. Everyone has “deprived themselves of the luxury of giving” because “giving hath impoverished” them. I walk all day and get little. Allow me to assure you I am continually making “personal applications.” I walk all day until I must meet an appointment. I shall not speak more than twice here.
I have little encouragement to go elsewhere than Hamilton in Canada.
Dr. Willis and lady gave me a warm welcom, but as they are now en route for New York you may see them before you receive this.
I do hope Mr Whiting received the draft from Albany and from Montreal.
I hope you will believe I am doing everything possible for the interest of the Asso.
Rev. Mr. Manly is quite interested so is Mr. Marling both Ang. ministers. I met a Presby. Minister who never had heard of the A.M.A. Rev. Mr King of this place. He really grieves me. If I get $50, here I will do brilliantly. I expect to go to Hamilton next week. Dr Lachlin Taylor has been of efficient service. A Mr Davis of Cleveland was very enthusiastic about what I can do in that city. I can press forward the needs of the Chinese, if I knew more of them but the colored freemen, I can scarce plead for. Will I not be encroaching upon Rev Mr Cravath’s region? It will be very convenient to go to C. from N. London and Bradford are all on the line. If advised by those acquainted I may stop in these towns. God is showering His usual mercy upon me. The part of the money that goes to my mother's school I will receive when I see you. My mother has been quite ill lately.
Most everyone questions the propriety of the U.S. of begging from “poor Canada.” Please remember me to the friends at the rooms and send me the May mag too. Care of Mr. Jas. Fraser, Toronto, Canada.
Please remember me to the friends at the rooms, and send me the May mag. to Care of Mr. Jas. Fraser, Toronto, Canada.
Yours very truly,
Edmonia G Highgate
