No. 3. Linden Street Syracuse N.Y.
Dear Friends, Whipple and Strieby;-
I am so far recovered as to be able to hope and plan healthily for the future[.] I was dangerously ill nigh unto death more than once. I have regained my strength and with it a moderation, a calm prudence in doing even God's work which my friends feared I never would possess. My southern physcians forbade my return to miss'y labor until some time in Dec. But I can do something for the freed men north. I am well known in Oswego Co. N.Y. and several other counties. I have thrilling facts and a deep concentrated experience. You see my vacation tour to Roanoke, Newburn and Beaufort as well as in Norfolk Va. and vicinity, will aid me for I inspected and investigated thouroughly. Now I shrink from public speaking. But I can do it for God's suffering freedmen. I will do it as effectively as an earnest Christian woman can with God's approval. If you think favorably, send me an agent's commission. Could not Father Joclyn travel with me? I have always succeeded alone but I dont wish to do so now if I can do otherwise. Please consider the subject and write and state terms. I have at last obtained my mother's consent to fill a humble place a Providence, a country settlement three miles from Norfolk Va. Capt. Brown and Prof Woodbury both expected me to teach there and live out there with one of our best missionaries, Miss Lewis. Remember I shall expect you to send me back.
Very truly yours,
Edmonia G Highgate
Revds Geo. S. Whipple & M. E. Strieby.
