Louis Tappan, Esq.
Dear Friend,
As the first of September is near according to your advice I write in behalf of Miss M E Watson to ask your good offices in obtaining a place for her as a school teacher among the freed people in the more northern states where these people are- She is one of our best colored families. Her natural endowments improved by moral and mental culture qualify her to fill well the place she seeks. She is able to teach here, but our school committee choose to have white teachers, yet one of the best of them told me that he considered her “remarkably well adapted to fill the place of Teacher.” Miss Packmans Executor still delays for some cause the payment of her legate. When it comes you will hear again from your’s truly
