Rev. E. P. Smith
Dear Sir
Many thanks for the box of books &c. The children were delighted with the papers and I find The Freedman a great aid in teaching the primary scholars.
[?] knows if those who contribute to the various necessities of the freedmen could see the very thankful spirit their offerings are received by them they would be more than repaid.
Friday afternoons I usually distribute papers or tracts and I always leave school with a ray of sunshine in my heart to see the happiness a trivial gift imparts[.] And other times the loan of a book, or slate, to some little one unable to purchase has a similar effect. Often when visiting their homes these precious secrets are taken from a bureau-drawer, or inside of a large book, or a box, where they have been carefully placed from intruders and exhibited as a testimonial of their appreciation.
I think a teacher of freedmen often realizes those words of Holy Writ “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
Respectfully
M. E. Watson
