Churchville Nov. 10th 1868.
Rev. Jno. Kimball.
Respected Sir.
As you probably remember the school-house in this neighborhood is much too small to accommodate the scholars who attend school during the winter months.
When you visited here in September, you kindly informed the colored people that the Bureau would assist them providing the people would produce a clear deed of land for the same.
Before I closed school last session, subscriptions were solicited to purchase the land lying between the church and school-house, and containing nearly 1 3/4 acres.
It was distinctly given out that a portion of the land was to be appropriated to the school-house; and with that impression the people willingly gave in their subscriptions, and the land was purchased.
But now the Trustees of the church wish to hold entire control of the land, and are not willing to give the school Trustees a deed of even a small portion of the land.
Under these circumstances, the school-house may as well remain where it is.
The people have given so much money and not derived satisfaction from it, that are rather discouraged, and I think that it would be rather difficult to obtain more funds for them to purchase more land.
Feeling the great necessity of enlarging the building, I have taken the liberty of soliciting your advice, thinking that you may be able to suggest some course to pursue in this case.
As the Trustees and I also, are very desirous to do that which will be most benefit to the people.
Very respectfully yours,
