- Darlington Hoopes writes "on behalf of the colored people of this neighborhood" requesting a teacher for a new school they have prepared. The local people are able to provide a furnished schoolroom and board for a teacher, but cannot pay their salary. He suggests sending a black teacher as the neighborhood is "rather secesh."

I write on behalf of our coloured people in this neighborhood for a Teacher to teach their children in the rudimentary branches as far as reading writing and arithmetick They have a good new house well furnished, and will probably muster 30 scholars and can afford to pay the teachers boards but think they can't pay any salary. I think a coloured Teacher would suit best as the politicks of our neighborhood is rather [[underlined]] secesh [[/underlined]] please inform me soon whether thee can furnish one they have tried a good while and thus far have been unsucsesful They are [[strikethrough]] are [[/strikethrough]] generally orderly and worthy people Respectfully
